EHR giant Epic introduces new AI scribe capabilities for doctors

The news: Epic rolled out new genAI tools for clinicians, including an AI scribe solution that transcribes doctors’ notes during patient visits. Epic will incorporate ambient technology from Microsoft to power its medical documentation technology.

Zooming out: Health systems have been rapidly deploying AI scribes as they look for ways to free up time for burned-out doctors to spend more time on patient care.

  • 57% of physicians said the greatest opportunity for AI in their workflows is addressing administrative burden, per a February 2025 AMA survey. This response was 3x higher than the next best-perceived opportunity for clinical AI (augment physician capacity at 18%).
  • Some health systems have reported that AI scribes are reducing clinician burnout rates and improving doctor-patient interactions.

Why it matters: Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) system is used by nearly half of US hospitals, making it the dominant player in the space.
