The news: New York Attorney General Letitia James told hospitals that they are violating the state’s anti-discrimination laws if they stop offering gender-affirming care for people under the age of 19.

Zooming out: Last week’s executive order from President Trump directs government agencies to take steps to ensure that hospitals receiving federal research and education grants stop providing gender-affirming care to children and youth.

The order also instructs the HHS to consider cutting off Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement for hospitals that don’t oblige.
