The news: The New York Times (NYT) hit Perplexity with a cease-and-desist letter, demanding the AI startup stop accessing and featuring its content.

  • NYT’s letter stated that using its content in generative AI (genAI) responses and summaries without consent counts as copyright infringement.
  • The letter also asked Perplexity to explain how it’s accessing the NYT website, as the AI company previously said it wasn’t using a web crawler.
