Physician burnout rates drop to pre-pandemic level

The news: Physician burnout rates have returned to typical levels after huge spikes during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new Mayo Clinic study finds. The study surveyed 7,643 US physicians with similar demographics to the broader practicing population.

Digging into the data: Fewer than half (45%) reported at least one symptom of burnout in 2023, compared to 63% in 2021. That’s in line with 2017’s rate of 44%.

  • Work-life integration satisfaction similarly improved to 42% in 2023 versus 30% in 2021.
  • Physician burnout rates are still high compared to other US workers across age, gender, hours worked, and education level.
