YouTube and Spotify sharpen tools in the streaming wars as video podcasts surge

The news: In the ever-evolving streaming wars, both Spotify and YouTube are releasing new features to one-up their competitors, per TechCrunch.

  • Spotify added a podcast “plays” count. The metric will help listeners discover popular podcasts and help advertisers home in on top prospects. Creators will be able to compare their views with other podcasters’.
  • YouTube is testing a two-person Premium plan. Users in India, France, Hong Kong, and Taiwan can sign up two users on a single account. It costs more than an individual Premium plan but less than the Premium Family plan, which allows up to five users.

Key stat: 88% of podcast listeners have taken some form of action because of a podcast ad, per Edison Research.
